Osa Plans To Repair Rural Roads Gets Financial Boost
The Cantón de Osa announced yesterday in a press release that it will invest ¢604 million colones (us$1.17 million dollars) to repair some of the rural roads in the area.

The money for the repairs will come from an agreement with the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT), the KFW Entwicklungsbank and the German Development Cooperation - GTZ and the local Comités de Camnios formed by residents of the area.

The areas to benefit from the investment include Finca Guanacaste, Finca Puntarenas, Coronado, Venecia, Playa Hermosa, San Josecito, Playa Bahía, Tortuga and Finca 6-11, Finca7 and Tres Rios.

The Osa, in the southern zone, is made up of some 620 kilometres of rural roads, most of which border on coastal areas with great tourism potential, including surfing and ecotourism.

According to the mayor of Osa, Alberto Cole, the road repair will greatly contribute to better quality of life in the southern zone, offering better driving conditions for visitors and stimulate the local economy.

"In the last years we have seen how the Osa rural roads have been left to the wayside, now the panorama will be begin to change in a positive way with this project..." said Cole.

Mayor Cole added that the work will include drainage and widening of some of the roads.

GTZ has been working in Costa Rica for over 20 years on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

GTZ  assists local institutions, particularly in projects in the area of environmental protection and resource conservation, and local development.
