At Airport
Drug smuggling continues to be a
problem for Costa Rican
officials, as some visitors
decide to take home illegal
drugs in attempts to avoid
police controls at the Juan
Santamaría (San José) airport.

de Montes de Oca, San
Pedro, decided to name
each of their potholes
with the names
government minister,
including president
Oscar Arias. The
residents want the
government to fix the
road that has
deteriorated such that
even the buses and taxis

A directive by the vice-minister
of Transportes, Viviana Martín,
on November 21 to the officials
of the Policía de Tránsito
(traffic officials), effectively
ties the hands of traffic
officials with respect to the
porteadores (informal taxis).

Deaths Worry Officials
The Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) and the Policía
de Tránsito are in agreement
that there are too many deaths
on the roads due to traffic
accidents, many accidents that
could be avoided if drivers
slowed down and and not drink
and drive. What they don't
agreee though is the number of
deaths registered.
