Guatemalan Government Criticized
Guatemalan President Oscar
Berger was strongly criticized
on Monday after his report on
the third year of performance
and absence at the Congress of
the Republic, in which the
document was presented.
"The figures given by the
authorities are incomplete and
do not include the crisis faced
in the last three years of
2006," Hugo Maul, from the
National Economics Investigation
Center, told press.
According to the text, the 2006
economy increased 4.6 percent
and the fiscal deficit was under
2 percent, however, Maul holds
that there are important aspects
to solve, such as the closure of
the Bancafe and the lack of cash
in banks.
Farming leader Helmer Velasquez
said that though there are
historical problems that can not
be attributed to Berger s
administration, the government
has neglected agriculture and
given little land to farmers.
Velasquez says it is urgent to
make deep changes in
agriculture, firm up educational
reform and make possible health
access possible for most people.
