Colombia FTA Talk Hinges on US
Discussion in the Colombian
parliament of the Free Trade
Agreement with the United States
depends on US democrat
congresspeople s observations.
If the United States maintains
its position to renegotiate the
FTA, because they will not
approve it just as it is, local
analysts consider that it will
be pointless to call the
Colombian parliament to extra
sessions to approve or reject
the FTA.
The sources asserted that
President Alvaro Uribe counts on
support of the necessary
majorities to approve that trade
agreement, to which a great
number of Colombians object,
considering that it violates the
country s sovereignty and
independence.
However, the extra congressional
sessions would be useful, even
if the Colombian legislators
approve the FTA it would not
come into force until approved
by the US counterpart, which is
now under control of the
democrats.
That US party spokespersons
asserted that the agreements
with Colombia and Peru can not
be approved as they are written,
thus there might be a need to
negotiate.
