Salvador War Wounded Demand
Justice
On the eve of the 15th
anniversary of the Peace
Agreements, El Salvador s war
wounded former soldiers marched
in their underwear Monday to
demand an increase of their
pensions from the Executive and
the Legislature.
ALFAES (Association of Disabled
El Salvador Armed Forces)
protest they only receive
"hunger pensions," and ALFAES
leader Fernando Chavez Rivera
claims they are only demanding
rights established in the
Agreements, the endorsement of a
decree allowing an increase
between 100 and 200 dollars for
the more than 2,000 associates.
At present, their pensions range
from 60 to 150 dollars that is
insufficient to take care of
basic needs, the demonstrators
declared during the march in
which, besides being almost
naked, they carried wooden
crosses.
Members of the association
called on the Executive to
reform the Disability Law (which
applies to ex guerillas as well
as ex soldiers), to provide new
guarantees to that sector
affected by the lack of medical
assistance, fair pensions and
accommodation.
El Salvador underwent an armed
conflict that left 75,000 dead,
8,000 disappeared and 40,000
handicapped.
