Arms for Peace, Colombia Guerrilla

Bogota - Commemorating 45 years since its foundation the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) insist that peace is its strategy and armed movement its tactic to achieve it.

In a communique dated in May from the Colombian mountains, the FARC pointed out that the dignity of Colombians and recovery of love for the homeland demand a new leadership that promotes unity and socialism in its move to the future.

The insurgent group also expresses that it is time to overcome the "national shame of an illegitimate and illegal government, a generator of death and poverty. A government that is supported by Washington that acts to perpetuate war and discord while guaranteeing, with blood and fire, investment security of the transnationals that plunder our resources."

"An unpatriotic regime that, in spite of the large number of US troops that intervene in the internal conflict in Colombia it allows our sacred soil to be trodden by more foreign troops expelled from Manta in Ecuador, allowing the United States to operate a base of aggression here to attack fraternal peoples of the continent," it explains.

FARC adds in its communique that the current narco-paramilitary government "is not shamed by the confession of paramilitary capos that they financed the presidential campaigns of Alvaro Uribe."

The Colombia of today no longer wants the ultramodern warmongering of the government. It wants solutions to growing unemployment and poverty. It demands social investment.

It also asks for education, housing, health services, drinking water, worker's rights, land, roads, electricity, telephone and communication services, markets for products, re-nationalization of companies that were privatized, punishment of corruption, sovereignty of the people, protection of the environment, true democracy, freedom of opinion, liberation of political prisoners.

FARC recalls that 45 years ago it was founded in the heights of Margquetalia (Caldas), in a quest for peace, justice and dignity in Colombia. Since then, it points out "we are the armed answer of the dispossessed and the just against the repeated violations of the State."
