Former  President Calderón Insists He Will Run in 2010 Despite Rejection

Former Costa Rican president, Rafael Ángel Calderón, on trial for fraud and embezzlement, insists that he will still run for president in 2010.

Calderón, accused of fraud and embezzlement in the Caja-Fischel cases, insists that he will be the 2010 PUSC candidate despite popular rejection of his candidacy that the polls indicate.

Calderón is confident that he will be found not guilty.

"No on has been able to prove yet I committed any crime", said Calderón, adding that when he was eleted president in 1990, 48% of the people were against him, but won the election anyways.

According to the latest poll by Demoscopía for the Al Día in November 2008, 80.8% said they would not vote for the former president in the 2010 elections.

A Unimer poll for the La Nación done in February shows that Calderón is the most rejected politician in the country, with 33% saying "never" would they vote for him.

The poll indicates that 14% would not vote for Ottón Solís, 10% no for Johnny Araya and 5% no vote for Laura Chinchilla.
