Bomberos Working Together To Install Fire
Hydrants
The Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) and
Bomberos de Costa Rica are rushing to
install some 2.500 fire hydrants that are
urgently needed in the country, to combat
fires.
Currently there some 5.000 fire hydrants, of
which half of more need repair due to lack
of adequate maintenace over the years, the
majority installed between the last 20 to 60
years.
On example pointed by the Bomberos
(firefighters) is the case of Mata de
Plátano de Goicoechea, a community of 15.000
residents, where 66 of the hydrants, only
five are working.
The AyA (water and sewer utility) is said to
be finalizing the purchase of 2.500 hydrants
that will be primarily installed near
schools and hospitals.
The AyA move is a result of an action by the
Defensoría de los Habitantes (Ombudman's
office) of the lack of sufficient hydrants.
The Bomberos, who gained autonomy last year
from the Instituto Nacional de seguros (INS)
- national insurance carrier - will be
responsible for identifying the locations
for the fire hydrants.
However, no time limit has been established
for the project and for many to have a fire
hydrant nearby will continue a dream.
