Costa Rica On The Decline
The slowdown in tourism is expected to
continue through the second quarter of the
year, following a dark and cloudy first
quarter, as the world economic crisis
worsens and the number of visitors to Costa
Rica keeps falling.
A poll by the Cámara Nacional de Turismo (Canatur)
- national tourism chamber - revelas that
42% of those involved in tourism say that
business is worse than that of the first
three months of the year.
Canatur estimates that the number of
tourists coming to Costa Rica has dropped
11% over last year, when the country
attacted some 2.1 million visitors.
The Canatur poll took into account the
responses by owners and managers of tourism
related businesses, as well as directors of
the various tourism chambers.
Hotel operators and travel agencies are the
sectors feeling the biggest pinch of the
slowdown, followed by car rental companies
and tour operators.
According to Gonzalo Vargas, president of
Canatur, investment in the tourism industry
will fall as confidence falls, creating an
unfavorable dynamism in Costa Rican tourism. |
