2008-09 Coffee Sales Fall 18% To May 1
Costa Rica's coffee industry has logged
sales contracts for 1.36 million
(60-kilogram) bags of coffee from the
2008-09 crop as of May 1, the official Costa
Rican Institute, or Icafe, said Thursday.
This is 18% lower than the volume contracted
in the same time a year ago, when 1.65
million bags of the 2007-08 Costa Rican crop
were sold, Icafe said in a report, a copy of
which was obtained by Dow Jones Newswires.
The volume of the 2008-09 crop sold to date
is estimated at about 85% of the country's
output from this harvest, which is forecast
to produce 1.595 million bags, Icafe said,
adding the figure includes forward sales
locked in months before the 2008-09 cycle
started on Oct. 1.
The current year's crop sold to date were
fixed at an average price of $1.3848 a
pound, below the average of $1.4099 logged
in the same time a year ago.
The Central American coffee nation is known
to be an "early seller" in the market, with
forward sales for the new crop normally
starting between June and July.
