Colon Residents Object To Excessive Tolls
While a group of residents in Santa Ana and
Ciudad Colon are opposed to payment of the
toll maby consider too expensive, MOPT
authorities say there will be no turning
back.
The toll for the trip between San Jose's
Gimnasio Nacional, east end of the Sabana
park, to Santa Ana and Cuidad Colon was only
¢75 colones, and only paid on westbound
traffic at the Escazu tool booths.
However, the same trip on the autopista del
Sol - autopista Próspero Fernández with a
facelift - will soon cost ¢470 colones, each
way. The tolls at Escazu will be ¢310 and at
Piedades de Santa 160, affecting traffic in
both directions.
For residents west of Santa Ana, like Cuidad
Colon, to avoid the ¢160 colones toll, would
have to exit at Santa Ana and take the old
road.
That is the motivation behind the filing of
a complaint with the Defensoría de los
Habitantes (Ombudsman's office) filed by the
group of residents, who feel that it unfair
that they should be paying the ones paying
to finance the new section of the autopista
to Orotina.
The residents feel that the paying of the
toll at the Piedades intersection to reach
the west side of Santa Ana, Cuidad Colon and
Puriscal, is unfair. The toll booths at
Piedades for traffic to Orotina is not
objected to. The objection is that the same
toll is charged to access the section of the
road that is not part of the autopista del
Sol and has seen no improvement during the
facelift of the Próspero Fernández.
Guillermo Morales, viceministro de
Concesiones at the MOPT, said there is no
provision for differencing toll charges
based on the residency of the user and the
toll fees and the highway contract was
approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep) - public
regulator- following public hearings.
Once the autopista del Sol is complete,
travel from San Jose to the port town of
Caldera will take less than 45 minutes, half
of the time it takes now on the
Interamericana Norte, and will cost a total
of ¢1900 colones, each way, for passenger
vehicles. Buses and trucks will pay more.
