By Maja Wallengren, Dow Jones Newswires

Costa Rican coffee exports in April, the seventh month of the current 2008-09 crop cycle, fell 17% to 200,109 bags of 60 kilograms each, the official Costa Rican Coffee Institute, or Icafe, said Monday.

This compares with Costa Rican exports of 240,215 bags in April last year during the 2007-08 crop cycle (October-September), an Icafe official told Dow Jones Newswires, releasing first preliminary figures for the month.

Figures for total Costa Rican coffee exports in the first seven months of the 2008-09 crop cycle from Oct. 1 through April 30 weren't immediately available.

Physical harvesting of Costa Rica's 2008-09 harvest is now nearing completion across the country's producing regions, but output has gone from being behind the year-ago pace by 5% at the onset of picking to down 15% by mid-March, Icafe said last month.

Costa Rican coffee production in the current 2008-09 harvest cycle is now forecast to drop 12% to 1.644 million bags, Icafe said last month, from output in the last 2007-08 cycle of 1.876 million bags.
