One group of
workers that was evidently missing in the
May Day marches and protests were the women
who dedicate themselves to the "World's
Oldest Profession", which according to a
study by the Universidad Estatal a Distancia
(UNED), is made up a group of 8.500 women.
The UNED study revealed the work and
services these women provide is a part of
the Costa Rican economy, though may prefer
to hide it.
The investigation, "El mercado del trabajo
sexual femenino en la ciudad de San Jose:
economia de un model de emprendedoras " (The
market for female sex work in the city of
San Jose: a model of economy entrepreneurs),
found that the women qualify their work as a
productive acitivity and a lawful way to
support their families.
The study revealed that the majority of the
women are "emprendedoras" (enterpreneurs)
and a low culture for savings thier
earnings, which ranges between ˘200.000 and
˘600.000 monthly, which is well above the
minimum salary levels for non skilled
workers.
The study found that, in the majority of the
cases, the money earned is spent on basic
necessities to maintain their families -
many are single mothers - and few spend it
on education, recreation and their personal
care.
In some cases, sex social work is shared by
generations of women, not uncommon for
mother and daughter to work in the
profession, in some cases passed down from
the grandmother.
However, in about all the cases, the women
say if they had to do it over again, they
would not.
Although the legal age for consent in Costa
Rica is 18, many women enter the sex social
work at a much younger age, as young as 15
in some cases. |
