126 Of the 180 Suspected Cases of Swine Flu

The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
confirmed yesterday that 126 suspected cases
of swine flu have been ruled out following
laboratory analysis by the Instituto
Costarricense de Investigación y Enseńanza
en Nutrición y Salud (Inciensa).
However, there are still 54 cases remaining that are
under suspicion and waiting on the Inciensa
analysis, that has been working around the
clock since the confirmation of the first
case of swine flu in the country on Monday.
Ávila said that the two confirmed cases are
still waiting on the results by the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta,
Georgia. The results had been expected on
Thursday, however, as of last night they had
not yet been received by Costa Rican health
officials.
The health minister reminded citizens and
especially parents of school children, not
to panic, but to take precautionary steps to
avoid infection and contamination.
Minister Ávila asked parents to keep
children with colds home from school, as
well as fútbol (soccer) fans, to stay home
if they are under the weather.
The ministerio de Salud said that the
majority of the suspected cases are in the
province of San José, with 93 cases;
followed by Alajuela, with 22; Heredia, with
12; Cartago, with 7; Puntarenas, with 6;
Guanacaste, with 2; and Limón, with 1. Of
the 180 suspected cases, 37 are not
attributed to any one specific province. |
