Édgar Morales, secretary general of the
Asociación Nacional de Empleados Públicos y
Privados (ANEP) - the largest of the public
employees union - assures that in "Oscarlandia"
one cannot see what is happening with the
people because one lives in a bubble.
Morales said he would like to see the
president, Oscar Arias, to walk on the main
streets of San José to see for himself first
hand, the crimes and assaults and that goes
on every day.
"We demand that he pay attention to the
problems of security", said Morales.
Morales added that each year, the
presidential address is nothing more than a
pat on the back and a time when the
"political class" separates itself complete
from the needs of the working class.
The union leader said that the country has
been sustained thanks to the working class
and not the efforts of the government.
Morales agreed with president Arias in that
the teacher salaries has increased, but,
according to Morales, not of the efforts of
Oscar Arias, but, rather to the efforts of
the unions.
The union leader was emphatic that the
unions will not be meeting with the
government in the coming weeks to negotiate
the Plan Escudo (the government's plan for
the economic crisis), but rather to propose
ideas of the social groups and demand a
national dialogue to seek a solution to the
crisis.
Arias, in his speech to the legislators,
said he would be holding meeting with
business and union leaders over the coming
weeks to explain the government's plan.
