Hotmail Blocks Racsa Emails

Emails from any Radiográfica Costarricense S. A. (Racsa) account to hotmail did not get through to their destination this week, as Hotmail.com blocked all emails from a @racsa.co.cr email.

Hotmail said the block was in response to a report that hackers used the racsa email service to send at least 8.000 spam emails.

Hotmail says the hack was due to a lack of security by Racsa that allowed hackers to use the service for their gain.

Racsa has about 75.000 email customers and expects to have Hotmail lift the block as soon as possible.

Miguel Montero Corredera, director of network systems at Racsa, sent an email to all customers of the problem, explaining the need for customers to have a strong passwor and change it often.

The email, in many words, blamed customers for the security breach, allowing hackers to take control of accounts due to weark passwords, causing the block by Hotmail.

Montero said that in this case Hotmail decided to block the Racsa.co.cr domain and not the IP, which would have affectet many more internet email users.
