Eight years after pulling off one of the
most historic victories in CONCACAF history,
Costa Rica returns to the scene of the
crime. Costa Rica arrived in Mexico on
Friday shortly thereafter went back to the
place where they made history.
It was eight years ago when Costa Rica did
the unthinkable and shocked all of Mexico by
beating El Tri 2-1. Friday, it was a
different palace as quiet surrounded them,
something they will not hear Saturday as the
Azteca will be wrapped around in red, white,
and green.
For Costa Rica the "Aztecazo" is a huge
motivator. They know that the impossible is
possible and they want to do it again.
"The 'Aztecazo' has to serve a purpose, we
are the only team ever to beat Mexico here.
This game is a classic and it serves us as a
motivator," said Rodrigo Kenton, Costa
Rica's manager.
"Aside from winning we have the pressure of
not losing the game. We have to enjoy this
stadium, we cant stress ourselves over it,"
said William Sunsing, the only player from
Costa Rica who was on the roster for the
game in 2001. "We have the chance to win in
a spectacular stadium and we have to go out
there and play with joy."
Costa Rica almost didn't get the chance to
walk the grandeur of El Azteca due to the
fact that the FMF denied them the chance.
Costa Rica though appealed their decision
with FIFA and were granted permission to
walk the grounds.
"The field is great, its a big stage and it
is in prime conditions to play soccer,"
Michael Barrantes said. "We recognize the
pressure of playing here, but the team is
accustomed to playing in these types of
conditions. We are professional players of
the highest levels and were used to covering
our ears and concentrating on the game once
the whistle blows."
Kenton went on to agree with his squad. He
believes that Costa Rica are both physically
and mentally prepared for the conditions
that El Azteca presents.
"One thing is to look at an empty stadium
and another is to see it when i's full,"
Kenton said. "The truth is that our players
have been in scenarios with the same type of
characteristics as this one. A lot of them
have been through different world
competitions on the Olympic level and at the
youth level. They have come here to win.
They're not scared but actually motivated by
this, it's a great game for anyone who loves
football."
