15.000 New
Jobs Expected With Telecom Competition
The Cámara Costarricense de Tecnologías de
Información y Comunicación (Camtic) is
expecting that between 12.000 and 15.000 new
jobs will be created with the opening of the
telecommunications in Costa Rica.
Jobs created will in the sales and customer
service sector, as well more jobs for
technicians.
Alexander Mora, president of Cami, says that
the sector now has some 15.000 workers, and
could increase to between 28.000 and 30.000
with the opening of the telecom market.
The telecommunications regulator, the
Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel),
earlier this week approved licenses to six
operators, one of which is Intertel, whose
president, Federico Guardia, said the
company would be immediately increasing its
work force from the current 11 to 70.
Other approved operators like Amnet and
Worldcom said they would be adding staff as
well, but did not give details.
The Ley General de Telecommunicaciones that
removes the ICE monopoly on telephone and
internet services in Costa Rica, was passed
last year. However, it was not until earlier
this year that the Sutel was created and not
until this week that the first telecom
operators were approved.
There are still some 30 others licensing
applications pending, including several to
compete with ICE in the cellular telephone
market.
