Honduran Native Ballet to Cuban Event
Havana - An unusual demonstration of the
traditional Honduran people''s culture will
be appreciated by the people of Santiago de
Cuba, when the Garifuna Folkloric Ballet of
that country performs in that city, as part
of the also known as Fire Festival.
The visit to the Island by the popular group
has been included in the 29th International
Caribbean Festival, which will be held from
July 3-9 and will have Honduras as the
Honorary Guest Country, the Granma daily
said on Wednesday.
More than 200 artists, writers and cultural
promoters from the Central American nation
will travel to Cuba, and promise to
participate in exhibitions, academic forums,
concerts and stage performances.
The Garifuna Folkloric Ballet began its wok
in 1962 and it has represented Honduras in
different international events, especially
since it has been directed by researcher and
choreographer Armando Chrisanto Mendez.
This intellectual and artist has devoted his
life to the recovery, preservation and
promotion of the Garifuna people, a
community that lives along the Atlantic,
mainly found in Hunduras, but also in
Nicaragua, Belize and Guatemala.
Its ethnic origin has its roots the mixing
of Arahuac people and Africans, who were
snatched from their continent to be
exploited as slaves at the plantations in
the Lesser Antilles, occupied by the British
colonialists, who ended up in the islands of
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and
Dominica, after they were shipwrecked in the
Caribbean.
The Gariguna language has enjoyed the
condition of Masterpiece of the World
Immaterial Heritage, proclaimed by the
UNESCO, since 2001. |
