Honduras for New Financial Order
United Nations - Honduran Vice
President Aristides Mejia urged on Wednesday
the UN conference on the financial crisis to
focus on the adoption of regulations to
prevent a future repetition of the current
world economic catastrophe.
In a speech on the first day of this
high-level UN Conference on the
International Financial, Economic Crisis and
its Impact on Development, Mejia called for
designing a new financial and social order.
A new economic model is needed to put limits
on abuses committed by monopolies,
speculative capitals and fraud, he said.
Mejia added that this situation has led to a
weakened State, a non transparent
privatization of public services and the
abandonment of policies oriented to generate
jobs.
He also criticized the social expense cuts
and mercantilism, which "mainly favor the
questionable virtues of markets that are
only subject to self-regulations."
