Guatemala Maintains Education
Guatemala - Guatemala will maintain its
established budget in education for this
year, despite the drop in State finances and
other budget cuts, assured Guatemalan
President Alvaro Colom Wednesday.
To guarantee these funds is proof that we
bet on the future and on a different
Guatemala, he said during the presentation
in this capital of a new program of the
Guatemalan administration.
The project is looking to improve the
educational levels in service and to improve
the quality of educational in public
establishments, beginning with the poorest
municipalities in the country.
Colom personally launched this program of
the Ministry of Education, an institution
with the highest budget for 2009, with the
objective of completing one of the promises
of the ruling party, Unidad Nacional de la
Esperanza (UNE).
That proposal includes free education for
4.2 million children, monthly payments to
avoid children going to work and to put an
end to contract jobs for teachers, among
others.
Colom reiterated that the funds assigned for
security, justice, health and education will
be maintained, despite the world economic
crisis and their fiscal crisis.
The program presented this Wednesday
includes the formation of scholarships at a
high level in the Faculty of Inter Cultural
Primary Education and Intercultural
Bilingual, among others.
This will allow 5,000 teachers in the public
sector to obtain their degrees with the
University of San Carlos.
It will be developed outside of the work
day, specifically on Saturdays, and it is
prioritized in the 45 poorer municipalities
of the country.
The degree program will be two years and it
consists of 20 courses, centered in the
social-humanistic, educational and
technician-methodological formations.
The beginning is set for this coming July 4
and it is hopes to bear the first fruits in
June 2011. |
