Nicaraguan Opposition Radio Station Silenced by Government

Managua - Nicaragua's telecom regulator, TELCOR, cancelled the frequency of Radio La Ley, in Sébaco (northern Nicaragua), just before its inauguration, the EFE news service reports.

The station is owned by an opposition commentator, who blames the move on retaliation by the government of President Daniel Ortega.

The closure was carried out by 30 armed civilians who confiscated the station’s broadcast equipment. The measure has been described as a threat to an independent opposition media.

The president of TELCOR stated that La Ley was operating illegally, and that five or six other stations were under review, El Nuevo Diario adds.
