Panama Main Party Readying as Opposition
Panama - Panama's Democratic Revolutionary
Party (PRD), the country's main political
force, is focussing on the design of a
strategy to responsibly act as opposition
from July 1 on.
With the inauguration of President elect
Ricardo Martinelli, the Alliance for Change
will assume power with parliamentarian
majority in the National Assembly.
Amid the coming panorama, the National
Executive Committee (CEN) convened an
extraordinary meeting on June 28 in Veraguas
province.
The meeting's agenda comprises the report of
President Martin Torrijos as secretary
general of the organization.
The official role of the party as opposition
force will be discussed, as well as the
reform of statutes, and a call for an
extraordinary congress in the last trimester
of the year.
With over 600,000 members, the PRD lost the
presidency on the May 3 elections, its
congressional majority, and the capital's
mayoralty, among other relevant positions. |
