Araya May Not
Be Returning To Mayor of San José
Johnny Araya, who ran for the leadership of
the PLN party and losing to Laura
Chinchilla, may not be returning to the
mayor's chair of San José, but rather may
run for the position of legislator and could
be a future minister in a Chinchilla
administration.
The possibility that Araya could form part
of Chinchilla's team was made public by a
source close to Araya, saying that
Chinchilla had suggested the possibility
during a meeting at the home of her parents
in Palmares.
Although Chinchilla said it was too early to
be discussing the names of future
legislative candidates, but that talks were
underway with several people.
The leader of the PLN party has the power to
appoint four legislators of which are
rumoured to include Guillermo Zúñiga, the
current minister of Revenue, current Salud
minister, María Luisa Ávila, Silvia Poll and
Johnny Araya.
Araya was not available for comment as he is
currently on vacation in Europe. For her
part, Ávila said she is not interested in
being a legislator.
Fernando Berrocal, though not mentioned by
Chinchilla, has made it public that he would
accept being a deputy and even a minister in
a future Chinchilla government. Berrocal
came third in the PLN leadership race.
Thursday the Tribunal Electoral Interno
(internal elections tribunal) of the PLN
party made the Chinchilla nomination
official and became the president of the
party.
Chinchilla, in a ceremony held at the Balcón
Verde in La Sabana, said her work now is to
unify the party for to win the presidential
elections in February 2010.
