Nicaragua Denies Troops
Headed Toward Honduras
Micheletti warned that Honduras would
defend itself if neighbouring Nicaraguan
troops crossed the border into Honduras.
Micheletti said that he doubted that the
order was coming from the Nicaraguan
presidency, but nonetheless issued the
warning of reprisals.
Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, denied
any military troop build up at the Honduras
border.
"Brother Honduran soldiers, brother Honduran
officials, I want to assure you, swearing
before God and nation, that Nicaragua is not
deploying troops towards Honduras and that
we are not preparing any kind of attack on
Honduran garrisons on the border," Ortega
said on national radio in Nicaragua.
Ortega said that the Michelletti and other
coup leaders are trying to deflect attention
from the conflict in Honduras by creating
the idea that the conflict is really with
Nicaragua.
