Tegucigalpa -  At least two persons died and several others were wounded on Sunday when the Honduras armed forces fired on demonstrators who had come to the Tegucigalpa airport in support of the return of ousted president Manuel Zelaya.

The military fired tear gas bombs and bullets against thousands of people who have been gathering near the airport where Zelaya is about to land.

According to witnesses, one of the dead was shot in the head by a sniper shot. The armed forces also fired on media teams covering the demonstration.

Thousands of protesters on Sunday descended on the airport in anticipation of the showdown. Police helicopters hovered overhead. Commercial flights were canceled, and outside the airport about 200 soldiers with riot shields formed a line in front of the protesters.

Speaking live from the plane on the Telesur network few minutes ago, Zelaya says he is just minutes away from landing.

He asks that the soldiers now occupying the airport instead return their allegiance to him, "in the name of God, in the name of the people, and in the name of justice.
