Honduras Pulls Out from OAS

Washington - The Organization of American States (OAS) has decided to suspend immediately Honduras from the entity, as a consequence of the military coup d''Etat against Constitutional President Manuel Zelaya.

In a special meeting of the institution's General Assembly held Saturday in this capital, the member states approved with 33 votes for, all except Honduras, the suspension of the Central American country.

The text states that faced with the decision of the regime emerged from the coup d'Etat of rejecting the OAS ultimatum, the organization decided to pull out Honduras, in accordance with the Inter-American Democratic Letter's article 21.

The document calls OAS general secretary Jose Miguel Insulza to reactivate negotiations to restore the democratic order in that nation.

The accord does not clarify those talks won't imply recognition to the coupists, while exhort international community to review links with the de facto government.

The suspension does not imply Honduras evades its responsibilities, especially on human rights, the text stressed.

Insulza said shortly before that the decision by coup leaders of withdrawing from the OAS has no effect, as it is an executive without international recognition.
