It's Vacation
Time!
Hundreds of thousands of Costa Rican
students are out on vacation during the
mid-year school break that began yesterday.
School resumes on July 20.
What does this mean? Many families take
advantage of the mid-year school break to
spend time at the beach and mountain
resorts.
Traffic congestion will be lighter in and
around San Jose, but the beaches and resorts
will be crowded. Well, at least that is what
hotel and tour operators are hoping for.
During the last several weeks many hotel and
resort operators have been advertising great
discounts on rooms and tours to attract
visitors, filling a void left by visits by
foreign tourists, which has dropped off
dramatically since the start of the world
economic crisis.
To ensure a safe vacation period, the
Policia de Transito (traffic police), the
Fuerza Publica (police) and the Cruz Roja
Costarricense (Red Cross) are on full alert
to attend to any emergency.
The Transito will be holding spot checks
along the highways to curb drinking and
reckless driving, while the police will be
adding more officials in key tourist areas.
