Guatemala - A 4.7
magnitude earthquake hit Guatemala on
Tuesday with no immediate report of victims,
according to reports reaching here.
With Tuesday's quake, the nation has now
suffered 18 small quakes since Saturday,
according to the National Seismology
Institute (Insivumeh).
The quake struck at 9:13 a.m. local time
(1513 GMT). The epicenter was located at 90
km north of the southeastern department of
Santa Rosa, and was felt in the center,
south and southeast of the nation,
triggering panic.
Experts said that the quake was the result
of movement in the Jalpatagua fault that
runs through Santa Rosa. It also said that
some 800 very small quakes had been
registered by its monitoring equipment, but
could not be felt by humans.
The quakes have damaged at least a dozen
shabby homes in San Rafael, a settlement in
Jocootillo, in the southern municipality of
Villa Canales.
Experts also forecast that the quakes would
continue for a week and they called on
residents to remain calm. |
