Ibero-Am Summit Opens in
El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR - The first
session of the Ibero-American
Summit opened on
Thursday in San
Salvador, where heads of
state and government are
addressing youth
problems and the current
world financial crisis.
Nineteen heads of state
are attending the
meeting that is being
held at the
International Center of
Fairs and Conventions in
this city.
Although the summit
theme is "Youth and
Development," all
speakers attending the
ceremony agreed to
address the current
financial issues and
find a speedy solution.
"A long crisis would be
negative to employment
levels and the resources
intended for social
issues, so addressing
the crisis is not alien
to this summit" said
Enrique Iglesias,
General Secretary of the
Ibero-American General
Secretariat.
Iglesias said it would
be naive to believe a
global collapse will not
affect Ibero-American
nations because of the
resources amassed during
the last years of
economic growth in the
area.
"Thus, it is essential
that the measures taken
to face the crisis help
protect public
expenditure, mainly in
education, health and
job opportunities for
new generations", said
Iglesias.
Barely a third of the
150 million young Ibero-Americans
are employed and only 17
million of them have a
reliable job. |
