To Get 7% Pay Hike
Private sector employees
could get a 7% pay hike
starting January with
the approval of the
bi-annual salary
adjustment by the
Consejo Nacional de
Salarios (National
Salary Council).
In Costa Rica, there is
no minimum wage rate
that applies to all
workers. Instead, there
are three main types of
minimum wage rates:
general; sectoral and
occupational. All
minimum wage rates vary
according to
skill-level:
non-qualified;
partially-qualified;
qualified and
specialized.
The Consejo is made up
of nine members from the
country's main business
associations, labour
leaders and government.
The vote was 6-3, with
labour opposing, seeking
a higher hike of 9.08%.
The lowest wages in the
private and public
sectors are adjusted
every six months to keep
pace with inflation that
has surged to 15.77%
over the past 12 months,
the highest increase
over a previous year
since 1998.
