Flooding
Brasilia - Nine people
were found dead Saturday
in the massive flooding
and ensuing mudslides in
the Santa Catarina state
in southern Brazil,
bringing the death toll
of to 109.
The local firefighting
department confirmed
that 19 people are still
missing. Most of the
victims were killed in
mudslides.
Authorities said the
floods, triggered by
days of heavy rainfall,
are the worst-ever in
the state, affecting 1.5
million people, or a
quarter of Santa
Catarina's total
population.
Eight cities in the
northeast of the state
were isolated, as
bridges collapsed and
roads were blocked by
floods and mudslides.
The Brazilian government
has declared 14 counties
as federal disaster
areas.
