Guatemala Awards Cuban
Eye Program
Guatemala - The Quetzal
Knight Commander Order
has been bestowed by the
Guatemalan government on
a Cuban created free eye
surgery program, which
has already benefited
more than 40,000
patients from this
country.
The highest Guatemalan
distinction was
conferred by President
Alvaro Colom at an act
held in the Pacific
naval base, of the San
Jose port, where the
first collaborators
arrived in 10 years ago
to assist victims of
Hurricane Mitch.
Colom praised Cuban aid
in the Operacion Milagro
program and announced
his interest and desire
to visit Cuba, a country
with which Guatemala has
a great friendship.
Cuban ambassador Omar
Morales expressed his
gratitude to the
president for carrying
out a fraternal meeting
with those
collaborators, who
traveled from all
departments where they
are working to the
Pacific base.
Several ministers and
deputy ministers, First
Lady Sandra Torres, Jose
Ramon Ruiz, chief of the
Medical Brigade in
Guatemala, diplomatic
staff, and hundreds of
collaborators attended
the activity.
