Panamanian Government Assists
Flood Victims
Panama - Panamanian
President Martin Torrijos said in the
province of Bocas del
Toro that the government
will not spare resources
to provide emergency aid
to flood victims in
several regions of the
country.
The president noted that
authorities are renting
means of transportation
to carry food and inputs
for the flood victims,
and are working to
reestablish water
services.
"We have been
coordinating with the
entire system and people
in charge so that
everything returns to
normality as soon as
possible, above all
food," Torrijos
explained.
He added that barges
have been used to carry
fuel from Colon to
supply the helicopters
that will distribute
food and other resources
in the communities.
Torrijos pointed out
that low clouds delayed
air transportation on
Thursday morning.
However, brigades from
the Public Works
Ministry are working to
open the roads to
traffic, the president
added.
As part of the
international aid, the
Japanese government
donated 100,000 dollars
in materials, which will
arrive in this capital
on Friday night.
Weather experts reported
that rains in the
province of Darien might
cause floods in the
region.
