Peruvian President
Prioritizes Asia
Lima - Peruvian
President Alan Garcia
stated Thursday that his
government's priority is
the consolidation of
relationships, mainly
economic, with China,
Japan, South Korea and
Thailand, Asian
countries he plans to
visit in 2009.
The Peruvian President
made the statement in a
conference with the
foreign press reporters,
when he was asked on his
calendar of trips for
next year. He did not
mention any other visit.
Garcia commented that
the mentioned nations,
with which Peru is
looking for commercial
agreements, mean a large
market for the Peruvian
exports to help the
country to eradicate
poverty.
He added the European
Union, a block with
which Peru expects to
have a trade agreement
by the middle of next
year with access
facilities for the
Peruvian products, to
the list of possible
markets.
Consulted on the
possibility of visiting
Russia, he said to have
accepted an invitation
of Russian President
Dimitri Medvedvev, and
highlighted the
importance of that
nation, but he pointed
out that first he would
send a delegation formed
by ministers and
managers.
The objective of the
mission will be to seek
an increment of the
bilateral trade which
has dropped to hardly
nine million annual
dollars, something that
he considered a shame.
On the other hand,
Garcia declined to tell
in advance if he will
participate in regional
events and outlined that
they imply an excess of
trips, a reason for
which he said that they
should join all in a
single headquarters to
be carried out
continuously, from the
Ibero-American Summit to
the sub-regional events.
He scorned the scarce
support of his
administration, verified
by different polls, he
said that he "would not
sell his soul to the
devil" in exchange for
popularity, and will
persist in his economic
policies.
Finally, Garcia
reiterated his optimism
for the possibility that
the world financial
crisis end in 18 months,
thanks to injection of
capitals to reestablish
trust and stimulate
production and
consumption.
