Fifth Public University
Gets Approval
The Universidad Técnica
Nacional (UTN) or
National Technical
Institute will he Costa
Rica's fifth public
college in three years
time following last
week's government
approval for the
technical university in
Alajuela.
The UTN brings together
a number of existing
school with some 8.000
students.
The UTN plans to have
campuses in Puntarenas
and in Guanacaste,
according to Roberto
Thompson of the UTN.
The approval for the new
university has been
ongoing for two years as
legislators discussed
the bill spearheaded by
former legislator,
Janina del Vecchio, who
was recently appointed
to ministra de Seguridad.
Although the approval
has been given, the
government is creating a
three member task force
to oversee the merger of
the colleges that will
take about three years.
The four existing public
universities are: the
University of Costa Rica
(UCR); the National
University (UNA); the
Universidad Estatal a
Distancia (UNED); and
the Instituto
Tecnológico de Costa
Rica.
