Immigration Service
Leaves Those With
Appointments Hanging
Anger was the order of
the day yesterday when
visitors, with an
appointment, visited the
Dirección de Migración y
Extranjería offices only
to find out the service
was closed. The same
immigration service will
be closed today as well,
re-opening on Monday.
It is known exactly how
many people showed up
for their appointment
yesterday, some waiting
months and years, to
resolve their
immigration problem or
had planned a trip.
Although the government
had announced vacation
for public employees
between December 21 and
January 7, immigration
continued to hand out
appointments for January
3 and 4, for those who
required passports,
residency and other
services.
Mario Zamora, the
immigration service
director, explained that
it had been announced in
the press that the
immigration offices
would be closed January
3 and 4, allowing the
additional time to carry
out renovations to the
centre.
So, who fooled who? Why
would the immigration
service hand out
appointments when it
would be closed? Why did
it not inform those who
had been given
appointments with the
cancellation and a new
appointment?
Zamora answered the
questions by saying that
those with appointments
for those days were
notified by email and
for those who did not
have email, the notice
was made through the
press, radio and
television and that
anyone with an
appointment for those
days would be attended
between January 7 and 11
from 8:00am to 12 noon.
