New Prisons Built
The escalation
of violence and
organized crime in Costa
Rica has forced
authorities to build new
prisons, according to
Vice President and
Justice Minister Laura
Chinchilla.
The official noted the
importance of adjusting
legal tools according to
criminal behavior,
warning that more people
will be behind bars, so
prisons will be packed.
Chinchilla asked
lawmakers for more
support for the budget
to curb the situation
and fulfill a promise
that previous
administrations could
not keep, the newspaper
Prensa Libre reported.
Crime has escalated in
Costa Rica compared to
previous years, so
authorities plan to
reform the legal
framework by including
new criminal concepts
and sentences.
The programs to curb
crime will include the
possible construction of
a penitentiary center in
Pococi, the remodeling
of dozens of them and
the creation of three
specialized units to
work with the prison
police.
