Las Pintas Forecasts Wet
February
Many Costa Ricans do not
believe in the
predictions of the
Instituto Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN) - the
national weather service
- but rather rely on
lore to predict the
weather. And according
to lore, February will
be wet.
The Las Pintas is a name
given to the first days
of January when the
weather of each day is
supposed to forecast the
weather for the coming
month and year. So, if
it rains in the first
days of January and it
has, that is the weather
forecast for the month
of February,
Las Pintas is actually
the forecasting of the
weather for the entire
year based on the first
12 days of January. For
example, if it is sunny
on January 3, March will
be sunny. If rainy on
January 6, June will be
rainy. And so on.
During the first three
days of January, San
José and the rest of the
country has experienced
high winds, rain,
drizzle, floods and sun.
Christmas was unusually
cold and wet for the
"dry season". The first
weeks of January are
typically cool during
the day and cold at
night, especially in the
elevated areas.
