Traffic in downtown San
Jose yesterday was worse
than ever, as a lane of
Paseo Colón and Avenida
Central was blocked off
to allow runners to
compete in the Maratón
Internacional de Costa
Rica, and with only a
few Policía de Tránsito
(traffic) officials on
hand to control and
divert traffic.
Added to the lane
closures, which was
controlled by the
Policía Municipal, meter
maids and volunteers,
was the closure of the
Calle on the east side
of the Sabana Park at
the León Cortés statue,
as organizers erected a
stage for the lighting
of the "Coca Cola"
Christmas tree.
Traffic on the General
Cañas into San José was
backed up to La Uruca.
The marathon ran longer
than expected at about
noon the Policía de
Tránsito removed its
officers from patrol of
the route that extended
into Pavas.
Guillermo Sáenz,
organizer of the event,
said that it had been
planned to start 6am and
run until noon. However,
the run didn't actually
begin until after 11am
and thus the problem
with traffic control.
