Costa Rica Coffee
Exports Down 2.9%
Costa Rican coffee
exports in November, the
second month of the new
2008-09 crop cycle, fell
2.9% to 64,060 bags of
60 kilograms each, the
official Costa Rican
Coffee Institute, or
Icafe, said Thursday.
This compares with Costa
Rican exports of 66,003
bags in November last
year during the previous
2007-08 crop cycle
(October-September),
Icafe said in its latest
monthly report.
Total Costa Rican coffee
exports for the first
two months of the
2008-09 crop cycle from
Oct. 1 through Nov. 30,
meanwhile, were up 16%
to 115,932 bags from
100,021 bags in the
first two months of the
2007-08 cycle, Icafe
said.
Physical harvesting of
Costa Rica's 2008-09
harvest started in the
medium altitudes last
month, and is expected
to start in earnest this
month in most of the
country's key producing
high-altitude areas.
Coffee from the new crop
won't start reaching the
market until early
December and exports
shipped in the first few
months of the new cycle
traditionally consist
almost exclusively of
previous-crop beans.
