Work Day For Domestic
Employees Reduced
The working day for
domestic workers (maids
in private homes) was
reduced from 12 to 8
hours as legislators
approved a bill in the
first debate after 17
years of discussion.
In addition to reducing
the working day, now it
also establishes that a
working night for
domestic servants cannot
be more than 6 hours.
In the country, there
are close to 150,000
domestic workers, who in
addition to a shorter
work day will also have
a special salary
(whether it be lodging
or food) cannot be a
part of the minimum
salary that currently is
¢115,433 per month.
Another contemplated
measure in this law is
that they should have an
insurance policy for
risks at work. The
insurance is to be
provided provided by the
employer with a
disability pay of up to
three months when the
domestic suffer a
contagious illness from
member in the house
where the work.
The bill now awaits
second debate and voting
and the signature of
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, before it
can be enacted. |
