International Court Sets
Sights on Colombia
BOGOTA - Internacional
Criminal Court (ICC)
Attorney Luis Moreno
began on Monday a
working visit to
Colombia to request
information about the
investigations of the
parapolitics scandal.
According to an ICC
spokesman, that
international court is
interested in knowing
the progress of the
trials against military
officers and
congresspeople involved
in crimes committed by
paramilitary agents and
about extraditions of ex
military chiefs of those
groups to the United
Sates.
The visit, which will
last until Wednesday,
started on Monday with a
meeting with Foreign
Minister Jaime Bermudez.
Meetings with Attorney
General Mario Iguaran
and the Supreme Court of
Justice judges have been
also planned.
Some media have
announced a meeting with
President Alvaro Uribe,
but it has not been
confirmed yet by Casa de
Nariño (the government
house).
Moreno's visit, the
second in less than a
year, develops amid
strong friction among
the Colombian top
justice authorities and
the government.
The most recent scandal
came to light on Sunday,
when Semana magazine
revealed secret meetings
between Executive
advisors and ex
paramilitary chiefs.
The objective would be
to fabricate evidence to
discredit Justice
performance in the
investigations against
dozens of politicians
for their relations with
the illegal paramilitary
forces.
Supreme Court President
Francisco Ricaurte
called those facts a
plot, and announced that
he would report it to
the ICC attorney. |
