Cuba Helps Colombia Rid
Illiteracy
The Colombian department
of Boyaca will be
declared free of
illiteracy when 51
thousand inhabitants
receive their
certificates from the
Cuban literacy workshop
called Yes, I can.
The projectb was
realized after an
agreement signed in
November of 2006 between
the Boyaca government
and the Latin American
and Caribbean
Educational Institute (IPLAC)
of Havana.
Since then a group of 11
Cuban specialists have
worked with 5,512
volunteer teachers and
610 regional
coordinators in the 123
municipalities of the
department. Most were
secondary school
students who gave their
time voluntarily.
Due to the systematic
work of Cuban experts,
volunteer teachers and
coordinators, to date
more than 35,000 persons
graduated with their
certificates.
The method Yes, I can
has been successfully
applied in many
countries and in
different languages, and
is based on combining
numbers and letters to
help the process of
learning to read and
write. It also uses
videos, and the speed of
assimilation of
knowledge by the
students is a constant. |
