5.9 Earthquake Hits
Southern Ecuador
An earthquake measuring
5.9 on the Richter scale
hit southern Ecuador
Tuesday night, causing
great panic among
residents, the country's
geophysical institute
said Wednesday.
There have been no
reports of casualties so
far.
The quake occurred at
23:43 local time and its
epicenter was located in
the state of Loja, 480
km south of the capital
city, on the border with
Peru, at a depth of 28.6
km.
Some buildings in the
border area collapsed
and cracks appeared on
others.
The tremor was also felt
in the major cities of
Guayaquil and Cuenca.
The geophysical
institute said it is the
strongest quake in the
country this year.
