It's Good to be
Mayor!
Johnny Araya has been at
the head of the
Municipalidad de San
José for more than 15
years and it has paid
off for him, as his
salary continues to
increase regularly.
His next pay hike comes
in January when with the
˘400.000 colones raise
his monthly salary comes
to ˘4.565.224 colones
(us$8.847 dollars).
Xinia Escalante,
president of the
Asociación de
Profesionales de la
Municipalidad de San
José, is quick to remind
that Araya's salary this
year alone increased by
˘867.000 colones
monthly.
Escalante says that,
without getting into the
legal, the mayor's
salary is ethically
immoral. All municipal
employees legally will
be getting a 9.5% pay
hike for 2008, however,
the mayor's salary hike
is well above that.
The salary does not take
into account the use of
a vehicle, gasoline nor
social expenses by the
mayor to attend public
functions.
In fact, Araya takes
home more than the
president of Costa Rica,
Oscar Arias, who
receives a monthly
paycheck of ˘4.440.000
colones (us$8.600
dollars). |
