Early Detection
of Breast Cancer Has a
New Ally
The Registro Nacional de
Tumores de Costa Rica
(national register for
tumours) indicates that
some 7.500 new cases of
breast cancer are
diagnosed every year.
Experts say that early
detection can make all
the difference.
Now women in Costa Rica
have a new ally to help
detect breast cancer
early, using a special
vest that teaches the
proper technique of a
breast exam and what a
possible tumour can feel
like.
Currently there are only
two such vests available
in the country and they
belong to the Asociación
de Médicas de Costa Rica
(Costa Rican medical
association).
Each vest costs some
us$300 and the purchase
of more vests is being
sponsored by the sale of
a key chain from the
Avon company, whose
proceeds will help
finance future
purchases.
Helping the Asociación
de Médicas de Costa Rica
in the campaign are the
Caja Costarricense del
Seguro Social (CCSS),
Avon and the
Municipalidad de San
José.
In addition to the vests
that are used in forums
and discussions on
breast cancer, the
Municipalidad will be
illuminating in pink the
main office buildings in
the city, a symbol in
the fight against breast
cancer in October, the
breast cancer awareness
