Confiscated Goods
Donated To Public
Institutions
Five tractor trailers,
two trucks, a tanker,
three vehicles and a
Cessna private jet were
some of the items
donated by the Instituto
Costarricenses contra
las Drogas (ICD) to
various government
institutions and
associations last week.
The transportation
vehicles are all part of
goods confiscated by
authorities from drug
traffickers, according
to José Torres,
viceministro de la
Presidencia and directot
of the ICD.
Torres explained that
according to regulation
8204, all goods
confiscated from drug
trafficking must be
donated.
"The law obligates us to
hand over 60% fo all
goods and money
confiscated from the
illegal drug trade to
drug use prevention
programs, treatment and
rehabilitation promoted
by the IAFA", said
Torres.
Torres added that
another 30% of the goods
are handed over to the
Ministerio Público, the
DIS, the OIJ and the
Ministerio de Seguridad
Pública. The balance is
used to assure the
upkeep of the
confiscated goods.
Some of the institutions
benefiting from the
donations include the al
Instituto Costarricenses
de Ferrocarriles
(railway), the Sistema
Nacional de Radio y
Televisión Nacional
(national radio and
television system),the
Fundación Ambiental
Eco21, the Ministerio de
Seguridad Pública, the
Hospicio de Huérfanos
and the asociación Manos
Solidarias.
Torres did not say the
value of the donated
goods, but assured it is
a large number and in
the event that they
cannot find a public
institution to donate
goods to, the ICD then
seeks out other
organizations involved
in the fight against
drugs. |
