Greetings Tico Style
Costa Ricans have a
peculiar way of
greeting. Putting aside
the formal "buenos dias",
the other greetings, if
heard well, can be
bewildering.
One of the more popular
greetings is "Qué me
dice?", loosely
translated into "what's
up?". The greeter
doesn't wait for a
response as none is
expected. The correct
response to the greeting
seems to be a simple nod
of the head.
Another popular
greeting, especially
among men is "Eso..! or
"that!" The word Eso
comes from the phrase "Qué
es eso?" (what is that).
Sometimes it used as "Eso
es..!".
Other greetings on the
list of "tiquicias" (Tico
slang) are "Campeón!", "Quiubo!",
"Pura carnita!", "Varón!",
"Qué, Siempre morado?",
"Puro popón?",Qué, a la
par del dólar?" or the
loved "Pura vida!".
The "Pura vida, Mae!"
and the "Dijay" have
become extremely popular
among the young, while
"Como le va?" among the
older.
Although "buenos dias"
seems to be going the
wayside, the greeting
will always get a
response and a friendly
smile from strangers.
