streets with prize value
of ¢2.7 billion colones
(us52.3 million
dollars).
The a "entero"
(complete) lottery
ticket costs ¢30.000
colones (us$58) and will
pay out a grand prize of
¢540 million colones
(us$1 million dollars).
Fractions of an entero -
40 in total -can be
purchased for ¢750
colones and will pay out
¢13.5 million colones.
The "gordo" as it is
known on the street is
one of the most sought
out and lottery ticket
buyers get their numbers
early to avoid
disappointment for the
December 16 draw.
The lottery tickets can
be purchased from any
authorized lottery
ticket vendor or
directly at the officers
of the Junta de
Protección Social de San
José (JPS), at any
branch of the Banco de
Costa Rica and the
Crédito Agrícola.
The JPS, the issuer of
the all lottery games in
Costa Rica, asking for
people to report any
vendors who are selling
tickets for higher than
their face value or
refuse to sell a
particular number, a
practice that is common
of some vendors to hold
back a number of series
of numbers until the
last days before the
draw and then offer them
at a premium, a practice
that is against JPS
rules and regulations
for lotteries.
This year the draw will
be in Cartago instead of
the usual location of La
Plaza de la Cultura in
downtown San José.
